Coinbase review: the easiest on-ramp in the US, at a price

Coinbase is the easiest, safest on-ramp to crypto in the US — and you pay for it in fees. Our honest 2026 review of fees, security, staking, and who should actually use it.

ScalpStreet verdict

The safest, simplest way to get into crypto in the US, with real regulatory cover behind it. Best for beginners and long-term holders who value peace of mind over saving a few basis points. Active traders should use Advanced Trade or look elsewhere.

The 30-second version
  • Best for: beginners, and anyone who wants a regulated US exchange and will pay for simplicity and safety.
  • Watch out for: fees. The simple buy screen can add a 1–3% spread on top of the market price; Advanced Trade is far cheaper for the same coins.
  • The reassurance: Coinbase is a publicly traded, US-regulated company with 100M+ users and USD cash balances FDIC-insured up to $250,000.

What Coinbase is

Coinbase is one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world, serving more than 100 million users and listing 275+ digital assets. Beyond simple buying and selling, it offers futures, staking, a self-custody Coinbase Wallet, and the Coinbase Card for spending crypto in the real world. Its whole design philosophy is to make crypto feel as normal as a banking app, and on that goal it largely succeeds.

The fees are the catch

This is the single most important thing to understand before you use Coinbase. There are effectively two Coinbases. The simple buy-and-sell screen most beginners land on is convenient, but it bakes a spread into the price, and on mobile that markup can run 1 to 3 percent every time you buy or sell. That is real money on a large purchase. Advanced Trade, which is free and sits inside the same account, uses a normal maker-taker fee schedule that starts around 0.60% and falls as your volume grows. Same coins, same custody, a fraction of the cost. If you take one thing from this review, it is to use Advanced Trade.

Security and regulation

This is where Coinbase earns its premium. It is a publicly traded US company, which means audited financials and a level of scrutiny most exchanges never face. It operates under regulators including the New York Department of Financial Services, and cash balances held in USD are FDIC-insured up to $250,000. That insurance covers the dollars, not the crypto, an important distinction, but the overall posture is about as conservative and transparent as the industry gets.

Staking and extras

You can stake proof-of-stake assets directly from your account with small balances, which is a genuinely easy way to earn protocol rewards. Just know Coinbase takes a commission, typically around 35% of the rewards you earn, though Coinbase One subscribers pay less. The Coinbase Card and the self-custody wallet round out an ecosystem that keeps you inside one trusted brand from your first purchase to spending it.

Who should use it

If you are new, nervous, and want the safest, simplest way to buy your first crypto in the US, Coinbase is the easy recommendation, as long as you switch to Advanced Trade to stop overpaying. If you are an active trader chasing the lowest fees, you will likely prefer a venue built for that. For long-term holdings, moving coins off any exchange to a hardware wallet is still the safest move.
